Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Mooting Competition, Law Studentsโ€™ Conference and Judicial Colloquium

Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon South Asian Mooting Competition was envisaged by Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar. It was held at Lloyd Law College for the first time in 2015 with an aim to provide the right academic and simulated exposure to the budding Law students and polish their skill-sets further. Over a period of seven years, it has brought a paradigm shift in Law education and training in the Asian countries and is doing the much-needed task of connecting the legal fraternities not just across South Asian countries but from this edition across Asian countries too. In its 7th Edition the competition is renamed as Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Global Jural Conclave 2021-22. This Jural Conclave is being organized by Lloyd Law College with technical support from Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) from 25th to 27th February, 2022 in hybrid mode.

I. The competition has two stages: The India Round and the Asian Round. The India Round of the competition was held from 26th to 28th November, 2021 where a total of 7 teams from India qualified for the Asian round. The Asian Round over these three days witnessed a participation of 100 participants held at Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida, via hybrid mode. The Inaugural Ceremony of Prof. NR Madhava Menon Global Jural Conclave 2021-22 was held on 26th February, 2022. It was graced by the presence and inaugural address by Honโ€™ble Mr. Justice A.M. Khanwilwar, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Guest. The Moot proposition of this Asian Round has been authored by Dr. Anant Vijay Maria, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and settled by Mr. R. Venkataramani, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India based on the theme of โ€œRight to Health: Issues and Challenges in Asiaโ€. There were four stages of the competition, the Preliminary round, Quarters and Semi Finals and the Final Round. The first three rounds were judged by over 50 adjudicators from the bar, bench and the academia. II. In the Studentโ€™s Conference a total of 13 research articles on different sub โ€“themesunder "Technology and Future of Lawโ€ were presented. The sub-themes wereโ€“

  • Right to education and digital divide
  • Biotechnology and bio weapons
  • Rights of persons with disability and technological hurdles
  • Artificial intelligence and future of law
  • Territorial partitioning v. borderless internet: jurisdictional issues
  • Genetic engineering and patenting higher life forms- ethical & legal issues
  • Digital governance- structural and managerial issues
  • Technology and administration of Justice

III. A third event, Commonwealth Comparative Constitutional & Public Law (3CPL) Colloquium on "New Asia and Diverse Constitutional Framework" was held on 26th and 27th February, 2022. The five technical sessions were based on the sub-themes:

  • Constitution and constitutionalism
  • Constitutional change and constitutional stability
  • International law and constitution making
  • International human rights and the constitutions
  • Legal pluralism and political pluralism.

Honโ€™ble Ms. Justice Sapna Pradhan Malla, Judge, Supreme Court of Nepal, was the Chief Guest of the Opening Session of the Colloquium. The distinguished speakers of the technical sessions, of the Colloquium included the Judges from the Supreme Court of the South Asian region, Vice Chancellors from law schools, and faculty Members from renowned institutions across the Asian region.
